Binding Of Dissertations

First off, CONGRATULATIONS on reaching a point where you can begin to contemplate binding your research! By the way, since those years were the hard part, we want the binding process to be as easy and stress-free as possible. You have several options with our thesis/dissertation binding service:

  • Copy the number of sets you want bound and drop them off at our bindery;
  • Copy the number of sets you want bound and ship them to us;
  • We will follow the specifications (if provided) of your college/university for copies you submit to the institution, or you can select your own layout for personal copies. The most popular cover material is buckram, which is not only economical and durable, but attractive as well. Other material options include linen (same pricing tier as buckram, but with a flatter finish and not as many color selections), and genuine leather. Pricing information is detailed below.

    Pricing assumes two vertical line down the spine, and 3 horizontal lines across the front (2-lines title and 1-line name). Additional lines will incur a $3.50 charge per line. Please see details under IMPRINT STYLE below.

    Buckram/Linen Covers: Lettering is done on our computerized imprint system using a font resembling Arial Narrow (sans serif font). Lettering is available in uppercase only. As a general guideline, a minimum of 1/4" paper thickness is needed for spine imprinting (1 vertical line). One vertical line will hold about 95 characters and spaces (65-75 characters for the title). If your title is too long to fit on the spine of the book but has a title with a colon, we will stop at the colon. Otherwise, you will be contacted, and a truncated version requested. One horizontal line will fit approximately 65 characters and spaces.
    If a chemical or mathematical equation of Greek letters, subscripts, or superscripts is part of your title, please provide alternative wording. If you aren't sure if this applies to your title, please contact Karen.

    There is no charge for a customized layout, but if you do not select our standard default layout, please clearly indicate the format you would like us to use.

    Imprint information is taken from the title page of your document. If the "year of degree" is different than that noted on your title page, please be sure to indicate the correct year on the order form.

    Genuine Leather Covers: Lettering must be done by hand, and price is dependent on the information to be imprinted. Please note the spine format does not include the title (though title imprint is an option for the front cover).

    • Total shipping cost (which includes a handling fee) is not calculated until the order is complete and packed, at which time a shipping weight is determined. To estimate your shipping costs or see the number of days for ground transit, please use the UPS system. Note that rates to businesses are cheaper than those to residences.
    • Ground UPS is our standard shipping method. If you request a rush service, expedited shipping is not assumed, so please be sure to indicate if it should be used.
    • We will ship to multiple addresses if provided with them. If copies are not identical, or bound in different colors, please clearly indicate which copy should be sent where.

    If you select rush service, credit card information (visa or mastercard) is due at the time you place your order This ensures we can ship your order in a timely manner.

    No order will be shipped before payment has been received. If you do not want to use a credit card, we will calculate the total of your order once it is received (with a shipping estimate) so that a check can be forwarded.

    Instructions for Mail or Drop-Off of Copies

    Bound personal copies of graduate dissertations can be ordered through the Conservation Section of Acquisitions and Resource Management Services (ARMS) at Davidson Library. Graduate students might wish to obtain bound copies of their dissertations for themselves, their relations, or at the request of an academic department.

    Please note- the initial filing of your dissertation with the Graduate Division is a separate process. For information on preparing and filing your dissertation with the Graduate Division, refer instead to the Filing Tutorial section of their website.

    To order personal copies, you will need to print and complete a Dissertation Binding Form (PDF) (.doc version).  Completion of this form includes obtaining signed approval and a budget/recharge number from your department.  Because binding costs are charged to the approving department, students will need to reimburse their department for the cost of binding.  Personal copies currently cost $31 per bound volume.

    You will also need to produce the printed copies of your dissertation. Use of 100% cotton bond paper is a preferred choice but not a requirement. You are responsible for ensuring that all pages are collated correctly. When ordering multiple copies it is helpful to ensure the separation between copies is clear. Manila envelopes or short paper boxes work well for this.

    Bring printed copies of your dissertation and the completed Dissertation Binding Form to Davidson Library, room 1573. Dissertations are shipped to the UC Bindery once every four weeks and are normally returned to us a month thereafter; the specific schedule is linked below.  Bound copies of the dissertation will be sent to the student’s department via UCSB Campus Mail when they are returned.

    For questions, please do not hesitate to contact David Howarter or Dela Ramboyong by phone at (805) 893-2584 or via email.
